Modern Day Maccabees Continue to Inspire Us

During the time period when Chanukah occurred, our people, outnumbered and oppressed, fought for religious freedom. To this day we are inspired by them. Today we have the modern Maccabees, who seek to protect peoples' faiths and defend them, physically and spiritually.

How many know that in October, Israel's President Rivlin hosted a meeting of Israeli Jewish religious leaders with senior Palestinian Muslim clerics? This was done specifically to issue a proclamation against the terrible atrocities occurring in Syria. Among those in attendance were Israel’s Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef and Sheikh Mahmoud Habbash, the Palestinian Supreme Sharia Court judge and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s Islamic affairs adviser.   Isn't that an amazing accomplishment?

Each page in our history is filled with the blood of our families who were killed by enemies wishing to destroy them either spiritually or physically, or both! And in every age, we had those, who at the risk of their own lives, inspired and continue to inspire us to follow in their footsteps.

Jews see what is happening in Syria, and we remember full well the Holocaust, focusing on an entire people effecting a genocide of six million Jewish men and women; one and a half million were infants and children. On my father's side of the family alone, 25 members were killed. And it is precisely because of this, Jews care so much about everyone, working for peace and trying to prevent genocide.

How do we do more than talk? Do you know that Israeli surgeons have treated more than 2,000 Syrian victims of the war? Just this last year, hundreds of patients from Gaza have been to Israel for medical treatment, and there were almost 400 Palestinians given medical help in Israel last year.

Last year Palestinian Prime Minister Abbas' brother-in-law received life saving heart surgery, and before this, Amina Abbas, the Palestinian leader’s wife, had successful care at an Israeli hospital. Moreover, even the sister of Hamas senior official Moussa Abu Marzouk and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh’s mother-in-law, daughter and granddaughter were all given medical aid in Israeli hospitals.

This is as it should be morally, ethically and with love of one another! You would not find this mind set or action in a country bent on annihilating another people! Indeed there are about 4.43 million Palestinians, 1.7 million living in the Gaza Strip and 2.8 million in the West Bank. This could never happen if genocide was occurring!

Just some worthy facts to consider as well.   The Jewish people have continued connection to their historic homeland for more than 3,700 years.

During that time period, there were always Jews living in Israel even after the destruction of the Temple by the Romans. This is when the Romans renamed Israel to Palaestina  or Palestine.

Israel has its ancient validity from the Bible.  It is taught also in the Qur'an wrote Shaykh Prof. Abdul Hadi Palazzi as he quotes the Qur'an, "Night Journey," chapter 17:100-104.  Jews have lived there since the  time of Joshua.

On the world scene, reaffirmation occurred through the 1917 Balfour Declaration of, the League of Nations Mandate, the 1947 United Nations partition resolution, the 1949 admission to the UN, and it's 69 years as a modern state.

This is the continuation of the Chanukah story. Where there is darkness, we seek to bring light; where there are lives endangered, we bring hope, healing and treatment.

Now, please listen closely to this “in plain sight” solution to the Israel Palestinian conflict.

It's so easy. Palestinians recognize that Israel exists; that they will talk rather than fight; and that they are willing to figure out a way to work out and sign a document for peace!

Penny and I wish you a Chag Chanukah Sameach!
